Jazz in the Park

The Getrude Salzer Gordon Jazz in the Park concert series with La Crosse’s Great River Big Band swings into its 35th year Sunday, June 21. The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the band half-shell at Riverside Park. The rain site is the City Brewery Hospitality Center.

As a special feature this summer, the band will perform Benny Carter’s 10-movement “Kansas City Suite” as originally performed by the Count Basie Orchestra. Five tunes will be featured during the June 21 concert, the other five will
be highlighted during the July 12 concert of the series.

The June 21 kick-off concert will feature vocalists Tim Henke and Cathy Reitz. Reitz’ performance will include renditions of Diane Reeve’s “Too Close for Comfort,” as well as Natalie Cole’s “Unforgettable.”

Sunday, July 12

Riverside Park
UW-L day will feature vocal Alumns Tim Henke and Gina Jorgenson with their renditions of “Save the Last Dance for Me,” “Goody, Goody,” “Street of Dreams,” On A Wonderful Day Like Today,” and “Orange Colored Sky.” UW-La Crosse Chancellor, Joe Gow, will take the microphone for renditions of Sammy Davis Jr.’s “Can’t We Be Friends,” and Sinatra’s “Luck, Be A Lady.”

The band will also perform the second half of Benny Carter’s “Kansas City Suite". Originally written for the Count Basie Orchestra, the five selections on this week’s performance feature saxophonist’s Jeff Ericson and Chip Schreader along with trumpeter Scott Jensen and trombonist Marty Busch.
